Oat milk is one of the easiest and most economic milk alternatives to make at home 🙂 There’s various ways to make oat milk, and many ways to use it as well!
The greatest benefit of making your own oat milk is knowing exactly what’s in it. There’s no question or curiosity of potential preservatives, chemicals, or artificial flavors when you make your own “milk” at home.
Homemade oat milk is a great source of minerals like manganese, potassium, phosphorus, B vitamins, vitamin E, Vitamin A, & minerals like calcium. This plant based milk is also abundant in antioxidants called phytochemicals, which repair damage in the body at a rapid rate.
Recent research has shown that the total phytochemical content and antioxidant activity of whole grains have been commonly underestimated in the literature, and that whole grains contain more phytochemicals than was previously reported.

I most commonly use oat milk to soak my chia seeds in my Super Seed Pudding, an alternative to creamer for hot drinks, a thickener for sauces, a smoothie base, or any need for cream in any recipe. Recently, I used oat milk as a sauce base to make one of my favorite Peruvian cuisines for the first time 🙂 It worked perfectly!
If you’re looking to increase your protein intake for pre or post workouts, or enjoy a simple bowl of cereal, this is a great dairy free option to weave into your daily lifestyle 🙂 If you love making smoothie bowls, then this is another great alternative liquid base for you to use! It’s definitely less toxic!
Prep Time
5-10 minutes

Highspeed blender
Nut milk bag
Medium- large bowl
Mason Jar
Ingredients (All Organic)
1 cup of whole oats
2 cups of purified water
1 Tbsp Raw unheated honey
1/4 Tsp air dried sea salt
1/2 Tsp Vietnamese Cinnamon 1/4
Tsp Vanilla Extract (optional)
Directions
Pour cup of whole oats into blender with sea salt, cinnamon, honey, & two cups of water
Blend on high speed for 1 full minute. If you’re looking to use as a base without any sweetness, then do not use cinnamon or honey.
After blending, pour liquefied oats into nut milk bag over a bowl.
Hold nut milk bag over a medium to large bowl as the liquid begins to strain out of the bag. With clean hands, or while wearing gloves, you may want to squeeze the bag to speed up the process of straining the milk.

Once oat milk is done draining into the bowl, you can pour it into a larger mason jar for storage or later drinking 🙂
I’ve found that it’s better to make oat milk when you’re planning to drink it within 24 hours. Beyond the 24 hour mark, it seems to sour quite a bit. I’ll let you be the judge of your own oat milk 🙂
For modifications like chocolate oat milk, add a Tbsp of cacao powder when blending 🙂 It tastes just like Nestle, a childhood favorite!

Should the oart be soaked first? Before adding to blender. And if so, for how long?

ideally yes, you’ll definitely want to soak your oats! Soak them for at least 30 minutes 🙂 Then rinse and drain 🙂
